Election
ELECTION
"Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God."
– 1 Thessalonians 1:4
(the following is by Don Fortner)
This blessed, glorious, doctrine of election is one
of the most delightful doctrines of the gospel.
What does the Word of God teach about election?
Election is "in Christ."
Election is "unto salvation."
Election is an act of God's pure, absolute, sovereignty.
Election took place in eternity.
Election's source and cause is God's eternal love
for his people.
Election is an act of free, unconditional grace.
Election is God's personal choice of specific sinners
to eternal life in Christ.
Election is irreversible.
Election is effectual.
Election is distinguishing (Isa. 43:1-4).
Election is the cause of all blessedness.
Who are the elect?
The elect are people who hear and receive the Gospel.
The elect are those who are called by the effectual,
irresistible power and grace of the Holy Spirit.
The elect are those who follow Christ.
Chosen sinners, when saved by the grace of
God, are made disciples, followers of Christ,
voluntary servants of King Jesus.
The elect are a people who are committed to
Christ and the Gospel of his grace.
The elect experience repentance and conversion
by the power of his grace. They turn from their
idols to serve the living God.

I know, had God not elected me,I would have gone on to love my sins, and not Him.

I started reading in Matthew on Sunday, and noticed this verse (almost as if it were the first time I'd read it) -
...and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." (1:21
"His people" - To me it was just more confirmation of election.
The whole sovereignty/election/predestination etc, doctrine is sometimes a very difficult one to wrap my brain around. But as God continues to remove the blinders and give me glimpses of clarity, I find it to be truly comforting and logical. The character of God is consistant throughout the whole of Scripture; it's easy to see how He has worked throughout history. Most of all this doctrine is humbling, to be sure.
Really, I'm getting around to reading your previous post! It looks interesting; I just hadn't had time yet!

Gayla: His salvation of His people is accomplished. It is a done deal. He had a determined people in eternity past, the elect, both Jew and Gentile, and these He has saved. He did not come to make man saveable.

Mr. Bluecollar
Good post on election.... As we have affirmed, the power that brings a sinner to salvation comes from God not man and that same power is active in sanctification. Praise God that we come willingly due to the grace and power of the Holy Spirit.
